Curriculum Vitae

I am a passionate Software Developer and Search Engineer based in London. I've been working with some of the UK's most exciting tech start-ups, where I love to build search systems for large and interesting datasets. In my spare time I write about Elasticsearch and am an active part of the ES community.

Short of time? This is me, in about 15 seconds:

Chris Simpson
  1. I have an expert knowledge of PHP, and familiarity with other programming / scripting languages.
  2. I love to use the power and flexibility of Elasticsearch to build powerful and dynamic search systems.
  3. I’m fascinated by “big data” and how hadoop can be used to overcome the problems of processing large datasets.

... still with me? Awesome. I’ve included more details about my experience below.

Recent Experience

2011 — Present

DueDil Senior Software Engineer — Search & Discovery

I lead the Search & Discovery projects. By migrating away from Sphinx, our flagship faceted-search browser enables users to discover and compare information about their suppliers, clients and competitors. I’ve spoken at various events about how we leveraged the scaling power of Elasticsearch via a lightweight PHP API to achieve this. The search cluster scales as required, and currently contains around 100 million documents.

When I joined DueDil, it was a pre-revenue startup with a handful of employees. 2.5 years on, we have over 50 staff, serve millions of requests per day and have closed 2 rounds of venture capital totalling over $20 million of investment.

2010 — 2011

Idio Software Engineer

During my time at Idio, I mainly authored RESTful web services with a strong focus on realtime data aggregation and geo faceting. These APIs powered Europe’s largest iAd campaign — serving millions of requests to iOS devices worldwide.

Idio helps brands build closer relationships with their customers and prospects by learning from the content they interact with — and acting on that insight. Idio since closed a funding round with Notion Capital of over $2 million to continue their impressive growth.

2007 — 2010

Various PHP Developer

Prior to my work within the London tech startup scene, I worked as a PHP Developer for web agencies in the beautiful county of Devon. For full details of these positions, please see my LinkedIn profile.

Hobbies

In my spare time I like to keep up-to-date with the latest technologies. I run a popular (well, popular within the community!) blog discussing developments within open-source search.

My non programming related hobbies are mainly based around my love of comedy. I dabble in a bit of standup comedy, and regularly attend live comedy events throughout the UK.
